Description: Two photographs of a Maori picnic at Pigeon Bush on the occasion of the settlement of the ownership of Lake Wairarapa. The first shows a large crowd of men, women and children with Seddon on the right in front of a two-storey wooden house. The second is of the crowd under the trees, one with a concertina, and three men holding up eels they had caught. A photograph of Members of Parliament in the debating chamber. The names given are: Symes, O'Maara, A L D Fraser, J Palmer, Hall, Field, Witheford, Wi Pere, Bennet, Kaihu, Duncan, MIlls, Ward, Cairncross, Stevens, Hogg, F M Smith, Carroll, McGowan and Hall-Jones. A photograph of the opening by Seddon of the Ballance Bridge described as "over Mangahau". It was taken by P De Loree & Son a photographer based in Pahiatua which may indicate the approximate location. The crowd in the foreground is mostly of children and the bridge has been decorated with plants. A photograph of Seddon, Mrs Hogg and Alexander Wilson Hogg opening a bridge. It is captioned at the bottom left "Mangainoka 4.3.1896" but this location has not been identified and the name on the reverse is illegible. Two photographs by Winzenberg of Seddon and others at a Liberal rally near Greytown and at a picnic possibly on the same occasion. Description: Gordon Coates and his wife on tour. Most of these photographs relate to Coates' as MP and Minister of Public Works. Most of the events record the trials and tribulations of journeying to remote parts of New Zealand to open bridges, post offices, power plants etc. The album also records some of the social and recreational events associated with the tours. According to Gordon Coates' daughter, Mrs Sheila Pryde, this album belonged to Gordon Coates' wife Marjorie, who collected, and may have taken some of the snaps when she accompanied her husband travelling in various parts of New Zealand. Views include trips in the North and South Islands, and views of his home and family, especially in Whiteman's Valley Road and the area around Silverstream. Also various scenes of floods (Hutt River), and storm damage. Photographs associated with roads and railways include steam locomotives, tunnels, bridges and viaducts, some under construction. Among the trip photographs are views of Ngaruawahia, including King Koroki's house (opened in 1938) and the Maori Parliament House. Description: The papers comprise of a number of essays and papers written by Syme. These include; `The Design of Gold Dredges', `Effluent Treatment' (part of a symposium on engineering in the meat industry), `The operation of small refrigerated stores and chillers' (a talk to the NZ Bacon Curers' technical conference), `100 years of the meat processing industry in NZ', `Ships, Waterfronts and Harbours', `National and local disasters' (including information and views on the Murchison and Napier earthquakes, Tangiwai, the King's Wharf ammonia escape and the Raetihi, Ballantyne's and Horitiu Engine room fires), ` Ships and Shipwrecks' and a poem on meat research prior to 1986. Also included in this collection is a paper by F J Jones on `Specification for the calculation and record of strengths of New Zealand railway bridges' and `Dredging as a profitable means of working alluvial auriferous drifts' by W H Cutten. Also included is a copy of Syme's New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers certificate, some biographical details about Symes and part of a 1976 AFFCo staff newsletter which gives details of Symes' career with the company.
