Description: There are two groups of letters, those of George Burnett and those of his brother James Burnett. George Burnett letters from the Victory at sea and shortly after his arrival in Auckland, 1850-1851, includes a letter-diary of the voyage. James Burnett letters from Auckland, Whangarei, Nelson and Grey River area. The latter 1860-1861 when he accompanied von Haast on his West Coast expedition. Also a letter written by Martha Jane Burnett (wife of James) dated 4 Sep 1852 in which she describes the voyage of the Joseph Fletcher, 1852. Includes family tree showing the descendants of James Burnett (1785-1851) and his wife Barbara Johnston (d 1861) George Burnett arrived on the Victory in Jan 1851 at Auckland. His younger brother James, a surveyor, arrived on the Joseph Fletcher at Auckland, Oct 1852, accompanied by his mother, 2 sisters, and brother William. Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Roy Burnett; history of the poperty; land documents; photographs. See MS-Papers-9389-31 for published summary & photographs. The original family member to acquire the land was George Burnett who purchased 286 acres at Bayswater which he named `Pinky Hill' referring to the battle of that name in Scotland (later renamed Waipuna). George farmed the property until his death in 1945. His son Fletcher then purchased the property and in 1972 his son Roy went into partnership with him for 6 years and then Roy Fletcher Burnett and his wife Nancy became the owners in 1978. In 2008 their son David and his wife Suzie became partners creating a 4 way partnership. In 2008 the property was awarded the New Zealand Century Farm and Station award to mark over 100 years of continuous ownership by one family. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Subjects featured in collection materials include: - business, legal and family matters, especially relating to Utica, Cincinnati, London and Whanganui - abolition and the anti-slavery movement (Cornelius Burnett Snr and his sons were members of the Underground Railroad in Cincinnati, Ohio) - American politics, education and human rights, including slavery, the Civil War and the Mexican War - the confectionary and bakery trade in the United States and New Zealand - religion, spiritualism and churches - music, drama and comedy performances (including theatre programmes) - property, land ownership, conveyances and deeds - farming and farm management - domestic service, wages, employees and tenants - shipping voyages, migration and international travel - the New Zealand Wars in Taranaki and Whanganui - the First World War (including nursing, training camps, the home front) - health, illness, epidemics (cholera, smallpox, flu or influenza) Source of title - Supplied title Whanganui Regional Museum holds handwritten copies of correspondence made by Cornelius Burnett (1805.360.2 LETTERS), the diaries of Joseph Augustus Hornsby Burnett and Cornelius Burnett (1975.83 DIARIES) as well as a deed, photographs and family items. Joseph Burnett and Mary Ann (née Burnett) emigrated from England to America circa 1830, and then to New Zealand in 1856 with their children Cornelius, Josephine Augusta, Alfred, and Emma. They had lived in Oneida County, New York State, known as a centre of the abolitionist movement, and in Cincinnati where they were involved with the Underground Railroad, helping runaway enslaved people. In Wanganui they opened a confectionery and bakery. From 1870 they lived at 'Oneida' homestead and farm property (also known as Trenton House), in Fordell, east of Whanganui. Description: Photographs and historical documents chronicling the establishment of a branch of the Olsson family in New Zealand and its later link with the Burnett family. Begins with the arrival from Sweden and settlement of Hans Olsson in 1871; he became a toll collector in the Manawatu Gorge, 1891 until early 1900s. Shows the contemporary Gorge area. Includes photographs of wife Anna Stina (nee Stenberg) and their two sons Alfred and Joseph Gottfred. Among these are school photographs and later home in Woodville. Documents Alfred Olsson's overseas service as rifleman in the New Zealand Rifle Brigade during World War I. Contains images of his marriage to Louisa Emma Lacey and their life together in Woodville from 1920s to late 1940s. Includes photographs of Alfred and Emma's children: Bertram Henry, Arthur Leslie and Edna Louisa Olsson. Shows family home in Woodville. Contains photographs of Bert Olsson as a young man and his involvement with the Young People's Fellowship and his marriage to Monica Burnett at the Terrace Congregational Church, Wellington in 1944. Shows house in Fairlie Terrace and children: Waveney Helen, Derek Arnold and Janet during 1940s and 1950s. Also includes photographs taken in England and Scotland during Monica and Bert's visit there in 1953. Description: Transcription of diary kept by Rev Henry Beaumont Burnett while in Wellington beginning with his preparation for a voyage from New Zealand to England on the `Euterpe' in 1892 and the voyage itself. He describes visiting his family in Westport prior to sailing on 15 January and wrote fairly regularly though not daily in his diary of events at sea, his physical condition, land passed, port visited, the weather and related matters. He suffered from asthma and sea sickness. Description: Photographs and historical documents relating to the Burnett and Tassell families, ca 1880s-2002. Contains photographs of James and Martha Jane Burnett (nee Fletcher) who arrived in New Zealand in 1852. Show views of Ovington, Northumberland where they lived previously. Includes images of some of their descendants, such as Hubert Burnett, who married Edith Boor. Includes photographs of Eric Arnold Burnett in military uniform, World War I; his wife Gertrude Florence Tassell, and their daughters: Monica Edith, Patricia Frances and Barbara Joyce. Also shows Monica working in Tadmor gardens near Nelson during World War II. The later photographs of Patricia Frances Burnett show her husband Lewis Milner Robinson, as well as their children, grandchildren and friends. Some of the images were taken in Ovalau, Fiji, where Lewis was teaching. The segment relating to Barbara Joyce Burnett contains photographs of her childhood, early adulthood and her wedding in 1954 to Glen Struan Robertson, as well as their children and grandchildren. The album also includes photographs of the following people: Elfrida (Frida) Helen Burnett; Mary (Molly) Burnett and her children John Bruce Kay and Janet Mary Kay; Leonard G Boor; Charles and sister Celia Tassell, as well as Charles' grand-daughter Heather Joy Williams.
