Rangiātea Church, Otaki

Description

Te āhua o roto i te Whare Karakia o Rangiātea, he mea peita e Charles Barraud, takiwā o 1851. Kāore he tūru i roto i te whare karakia, ā, e noho ana ētahi rōpū Māori moroiti, me te tū anō o ētahi, mō te kauwhau mai i te atamira. He tiketike tonu te tuanui o Rangiātea, he teitei ōna pou, hei toko i tōna tāhuhu kōwhaiwhai, me ōna heke.

View inside Rangiātea Church, Ōtaki, painted by Charles Barraud, circa 1851. There are no pews in the church and small groups of Māori sit and stand, while a sermon is delivered from the pulpit. Rangiātea has a high ceiling supported by tall posts, a ridgepole and rafters patterned in kōwhaiwhai.
