Kīngitanga flags

Description

Te Kara o Te Kīngitanga, 1862. Kei tēnei tuhinga kano pene ētahi haki e toru:

  • he haki tapawhāroa whero, mā hoki, e whā ōna rīpeka, me te kupu KĪNGI
  • he haki tapatoru kikorangi e toru ōna rīpeka i roto i ngā pouaka, me
  • tētahi haki tapawhāroa tuarua, he whero, he mā hoki, e whā ōna rīpeka me ngā kupu NIU TIRENI.

Kei te taha o te tuhinga ko te kōrero nei, 'I whakatarea ēnei kara i Mātaitawa, i Taranaki, me ngā karakia e tika ana (he karakia Māori ētahi, he karakia Hāhi ētahi) i te 10 Hepetema 1862, arā, te rā whakamaumahara i te koroneihana o Potatau.'.

The flags of the Kīngitanga, 1862. This coloured sketch shows three flags:

  • a rectangular red and white flag with four crosses and the word KĪNGI
  • a blue triangular flag with three red boxed crosses, and
  • a second rectangular red and white flag with four crosses and the words NIU TIRENI.

Alongside the sketch is the note, 'These flags were hoisted at Mataitawa, Taranaki, with appropriate ceremonies (partly Māori Karakia, partly Church Service) on the 10th September 1862, being the anniversary of Potatau’s succession.'.
