Description

A collection of material collected and written by Leo Brickell in the course of his local history research on Tāmaki in 1939-40 and on Putāruru through the late 1940s to 1960s, and a single item from 2022.

Includes a manuscript entitled 'History of the Tamaki Maori [sic] and early European, by L.G. Brickell 1940', which was completed when Brickell was a student at Auckland Teacher's College. This was later published as a book by his son Colin Brickell.

The material on Putāruru, in the Waikato, includes correspondence, newspaper clippings of articles by Leo Brickell, photographs and hand drawn maps. These were pasted into a scrapbook, with many loose items interleaved.

Description: Contains newspaper clippings and full newspaper issues from the 1950s and 1960s. Mainly ‘Weekly News’ history articles. In particular clippings of a series of excerpts from "W.Hugh Ross' stirring biography of von Tempsky, Beau Sabreur of the Forest Rangers". Includes a typescript timeline covering the “History of Putararu District”, an itinerary for a Waikato Historical Society daytrip and a copy of a hand drawn map of South Auckland to the Waikato River. Description: Notes and research materials relating to the Māori and early European history of Cambridge and Taupo and surrounding areas, written circa 1950s or 1960s. Includes eight numbered pages of handwritten text entitled “Early history of Cambridge to Taupo” and three numbered pages of “Random notes | Tirau | Tokoroa….”. Also ten pages of handwritten notes, newspaper clippings, whakapapa lines from Ngātoroirangi and Tia of the "Arawa Canoe", enclosed in a folder entitled “History of Taupo”. Title supplied by Library. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Transfers: This material was separated from fMS-Papers-12877-4. Processing information: This material was removed from page 45 of the scrapbook, for conservation reasons. A sticky note was attached to the inside cover of the folder 'History of Taupo'. This has been enclosed in archival paper for conservation reasons.

Description: An unbound scrapbook of newspaper clippings, many written by L. G. Brickell. Includes some hand drawn maps. A detached cover board has the title “Putaruru local history” and the first page has “Area history of Cambridge to Taupo | Putaruru Sch Jubilee” written in pencil across it. Most clippings exclude newspaper title and page numbering, but in some cases the header “Putaruru Press” is visible. Many articles have coloured dots affixed, some are numbered. Some pages have stickers or post it notes attached. Between pages 44 and 45 is an unnumbered handwritten index. The numbering finishes at 76. There are blank pages after this and some unsecured material interleaved. Title supplied by Library. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Description: Comprises inwards correspondence to L.G. Brickell, research notes, newspaper clippings and hand drawn maps from circa 1950s and 1960s. Research notes cover the “Taupo Totara Timber Company”, a history of dairying, notes on early Putaruru, and “Business beginnings in Putaruru”. Includes two hand drawn maps entitled: “Whakaaratamaiti Pa (N. Ahuru hapu)” and “Ngatira” . Title supplied by Library. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Description: A selection cut out pages and full issues of the ‘Putararu Press’ from 1956, 1963 and 1964. Some pages have green sticky dots affixed to articles, or articles cut out from pages. Includes two copies of the’ Putararu Press’ for Friday October 5 1956 (Golden Jubilee supplement) Individual pages include 7 June 1963, 16 October 1964 and 9 October 1956. Title supplied by Library. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Transfers: The pages from the 'Putaruru Press' October 16 1956 was separated from fMS-Papers-12877-2 - The other newspapers were separated from fMS-Papers-12877-4. Processing information: Most of this material was removed from between the coverboard and scrapbook of the original bundle, for conservation and storage reasons. The 1956 issue of the 'Putaruru Press' was separated from material near the index. A yellow sticky marker was placed on the photograph of the Oxford Royal Hotel on page two of the 'Putararu Press', 7 June 1963. This has been removed for conservation reasons.

Description: Part one of an unpublished manuscript, consisting of a handmade cardboard covered folder, entitled 'History of Tamaki Maori (sic) and early European by L.G. Brickell 1940'. The manuscript's first page is entitled 'HISTORY OF TAMAKI' PART 1. MAORI'. The final page of part one of the manuscript (page 76), is entitled 'Sites of Ngapuhi slaughters, from 1793 to 1827'. Contains handwritten and typescript pages, illustrated with maps and drawings, and images from other sources. The manuscript also Includes an index, a foreword, and numbered pages.
