Description

Photograph taken by unidentified photographer at Hinepare marae, Rangitukia. Shows a pōwhiri taking place under the shade of trees. Sutherland and William Tutepuaki Pitt can be seen sitting on grass listening to speeches. The wharenui, Te Tairawhiti, can be seen in the background.

Ivan Sutherland was introduced to William Tutepuaki Pitt by Apirana Ngata. During Sutherland's visits to the East Coast in the early 1930s, Pitt acted as a te reo Māori interpreter.
