This leaf was originally part of a bound volume consisting of a large fragment of the second part of the Gutenberg Bible. The volume was discovered in September 1828 by Johann Hugo Wyttenbach in a farmhouse in the village of Olewig, near Trier. Wyttenberg transferred the volume to the Municipal Library in Trier, but it was eventually sold to a private collector in 1932. Subsequent owners included Dr Maximilian Wiernik, who sold it via Sotheby’s (London) in 1937 to Arthur A. Houghton, Jr., of Queensland, Maryland. The leaves were subsequently dismantled and put up for sale as individual items, with the remaining 248 leaves (including leaf 69) sold by Scribner’s in 1953. Cf. Editio Princeps / Eric Marshall White.
