Collection of master tapes and other recordings of groups associated with the music label Flying Nun Records, dating mainly from the 1980s and 1990s. The recordings relate to over 70 different music groups and recording artists, including The 3Ds, Able Tasmans, Bailter Space, The Bats, Bike, The Chills, The Clean, Headless Chickens, JPS Experience, David Kilgour, Chris Knox, Look Blue Go Purple, Skeptics, Sneaky Feelings, Straitjacket Fits, Tall Dwarfs, and The Verlaines.
The material comprises production masters, studio multitracks, outtakes, live recordings, alternate mixes and demos, together with radio live-to-airs, interviews, and music videos. Around half the recordings are on open reel tapes of various types, with the remainder on a range of analogue and digital formats. The tapes are housed in annotated and labelled boxes, some enclosed with papers such as tracking sheets, label copy, technical information, and personal messages. The collection also includes some born-digital copies of album artwork and booklets.

Flying Nun Records is an independent music label founded in 1981 by Roger Shepherd. Focusing on 'alternative' popular music styles, the label has become internationally renowned for the work of groups such as The Chills, The Clean, Bailter Space, Headless Chickens, Tall Dwarfs, Straitjacket Fits, Look Blue Go Purple and many others. The label changed ownership several times in the 1990s and 2000s, being variously associated with Festival Records, Festival-Mushroom Records and Warner Music. A consortium of investors including Roger Shepherd bought the label in 2009.

Provenance: The bulk of the collection was previously held at the Flying Nun Records offices, Auckland. A later donation comprises material held by various recording artists and engineers who gave it to Flying Nun Records in 2018-2019 to be donated to the Library.
