Description: Ticket made out for two passengers: James Tawse aged 24, and Andrew Tawse aged 29. The ticket acknowledges receipt of 18 pounds as part payment for the ticket, with the remaining 18 pounds to be paid before sailing. At right centre is a list of the food provisions to be supplied weekly by the shipping company, as well as a daily allowance of 3 quarts of water per adult. Quantity: 1 b&w art print(s). Physical Description: Letterpress on grey-blue paper, 210 x 225 mm, with perforation along left edge Provenance: The vendor's mother inherited the ticket from a friend who was the descendant of the Tawse brothers.

Description: A flier advertising voyages from New Zealand to London on New Zealand Shipping Company vessels. Each of the following ships made two voyages from New Zealand in 1887: Rimutaka, Ruapehu, Kaikoura, Tongariro, Aorangi. The inside gives fares for voyages to Plymouth or London, and Rio de Janeiro. The luggage allowance is given. The inside gives a weekly dietary scale for each adult third-class passenger. Children received half of the adult allowance, which was: 6 lb frozen meat, 1 lb preserved meat (or 1 1/2 lb salt beef or mess pork), 1 lb rice, 4 lb flour, 3 lb biscuit, 1/2 pint split peas, 1 lb oatmeal, 1 lb sugar, 2 oz tea, 2 oz coffee, 8 oz butter, 1/4 lb raisins, 1/4 lb currants, 6 oz lime juice (in tropics), 6 oz suet, 1/8 pint pickles, 1/8 pint vinegar, 1/2 lb treacle, 1/2 oz mustard, 1/4 oz pepper, 2 oz salt, 6 lb fresh potatoes (or 1/2 lb preserved), 21 quarts water. Description: An information sheet for prospective passengers to New Zealand from Glasgow. The steerage fares are 15 pounds for open berths, and 17 pounds for enclosed berths. Intermediate and Cabin options are crossed out on this copy, but a cabin in the poop was 30 pounds. There follows a table of the dietary scale of provisions for adult steerage passengers, adult intermediate passengers, and adult cabin passengers. For example, a cabin passenger was entitled weekly to: 1 lb preserved meats, 1 lb preserved soup, 1/2 lb preserved salmon, 1/2 lb preserved soup and bouilli, 1 lb York ham, 1/2 lb tripe, 1/4 lb preserved fish, 1/2 lb beef, 1 lb pork, 3 lbs biscuits, 4.5 lbs flour, 1/2 lb rice, 1/4 lb barley, 1/4 lb oatmeal, 1/2 pint peas, 1/2 pint preserved milk, 1/2 lb refined sugar, 1/2 lb raw sugar, 3 oz tea, 4 oz coffee, 1/2 lb butter, 1/2 lb cheese, 1/4 lb currants, 1/2 lb Valentia raisins, 1/4 lb Muscatel raisins, 1/2 lb suet, 1/2 lb assorted preserved vegetables, 1/4 pint pickles, 1/4 pint vinegar, 1/2 oz mustard, 1/2 oz pepper, 2 oz salt, 3.5 lb fresh potatoes, 1/2 lb preserved potatoes, 28 quarts water. Additional provisions to be shared, are listed below (sheep, pigs, fowls, fodder, sauce bottles, celery seed, preserved fruit, currie [sic], barcelona nuts, celery seed, almonds, arrowroot, sago, spice, dried herbs, yeast).
