Warriors, man, woman and idol. Drummond's Island
Date
1847

Description

The artist's text describes the group as: 'The warriors' caps are made of the skin of the porcupine fish. The armour of cocoa nut [sic] fibres. The spears of shark's teeth.' The 'man' in the scene wears a conical headdress made of woven flax. A tree-like idol has been constructed on a stone base. The figures of the warrior and the man are possibly based on drawings by Alfred Thomas Agate (1812-1846) who visited Drummond's Island in 1841.
