- Description
Lew Sharman born in Christchurch in 1921. Describes early schooling and recalls Murchison earthquake in 1929. Discusses working for the Post Office in Greymouth, delivering telegrams and learning morse code. Describes role at Awarua Radio from 1940-1944, using a high frequency direction finding system to take bearings on German and Japanese ships and submarines. Talks about joining the Cape Expedition in 1945, voyage to Campbell Island, arrival at camp and unloading gear. Describes leadership, routines, radio equipment and duties as the radio operator. Talks about quarters, emergency shelter, food, weather, wildlife, vermin, leisure activities and exploring the island. Recalls communications with home, the first airdrop of mail, the voyage home and life after the expedition.
