Phillip Wilson discusses his membership of PEN and the issues of publishers contracts, royalty arrangements, getting writers recognised and the setting up of the Authors Fund. Refers to Ian Cross. Backgrounds getting job with Listener, referring to his short stories published in magazine `Book Nine'. Describes Oliver Duff, editor of Listener and compares with Monty Holcroft. Mentions the Literary Fund. On leaving the Listener to write full time, recalls working in Forest Service (Kaiangaroa forest) during summer months as a firewatcher, as a means of income. Mentions visit to New Zealand of Gerald Durrell, also visit of John Silken. Talks about friendship with Frank Sargeson and Janet Frame. Discusses the change of name of PEN to Society of Authors. Describes Pat Lawlor.
