Wes Cameron was born in Belfast, Christchurch in 1928. He left school in 1941 and he discusses his first jobs and what catalysed his interest in workers' rights. Discusses work in freezing works and shearing. Discusses involvement in Labour Party and the New Zealand Workers Union and time as organiser of Canterbury, Marlborough, Nelson, Westland Freezing Workers Union. Became a full-time union organiser in 1965 and in 1972 became secretary/treasurer. Discusses work conditions of labourers and slaughtermen and the formation of the New Zealand Freezing Workers Union, to which he was elected vice president. Discusses 1964 Meat Hygiene Regulations. Explains political in-fighting in union and difficulty of developing international solidarity. Discusses women workers in the freezing works. Describes positions held in Trades Council and eight years spent on the Federation of Labour Executive. Discusses time on the Arbitration Court. Discusses leaving the trade union movement in 1985, and the change in the movement since 1984, particularly in reference to the formation of the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions. Explains the importance of class distinctions.
