Description

Larry McKenna recalls family background, childhood and education in South Australia. Describes work as a jackaroo, then as welder's assistant before working at Flinders University as a science technician and graduating with a Science Technicians Certificate in 1973. Discusses life as fulltime student at Roseworthy Agricultural College, working as an agricultural advisor with the South Australia Department of Agriculture, meeting wife, working at Delegat's Vineyard in Auckland, becoming winemaker there, work as winemaker for Martinborough Vineyard.

Talks about interest in wine, being taught winemaking by John Hancock, history of Martinborough Vineyard, conditions in Martinborough region, suitable grape varieties, advantages of site, orientation of rows, spacing, training the vines, weed control, diseases, Pholloxera, irrigation, help from local council, Stan Chifney building first winery in area, change of emphasis of role, various harvests, marketing, quality factors.

Discusses the differences in processing red and white wine, things that can go wrong in wine making process, use of a wine library, design of labels, future markets, sales, enjoyment and pressures, successes, outlines choosing wines for cellar, export of wine, involvement with Martinborough Winemakers' Association.
