Douglas Howard Leigh born at Woodville, New Zealand 1919. Outlines family background - paternal grandparents came to New Zealand 1869. Refers to book `Memoirs of an old chemist' written by father and published 1980. Recalls Hawkes Bay earthquake in 1931.

Gives reasons for not joining father's career as a chemist and circumstances leading to joining Winstone Ltd in 1939 as a traveller and general hand, spending his entire working life (apart from time in Home Defence 1940-1943) selling building materials in the Hamilton Branch of Winstone Ltd.
