Born Opotoki in 1907, one of 8 children including twins. Outlines family background - Paternal grandparents, ex Shetland Island farmers - maternal grandparents also Shetland Islanders. Father was manager of Opotiki Dairy Association Ltd.

Recalls childhood in Opotoki; discipline/punishment; delivery of milk; death of brother; smoking; religion; social life; sex education/childbirth; schools.

Commenced work with Wright Stephenson & Co. Auckland as an office junior and rose to Chief Accountant in Head Office. Studied accountancy in own time. Gives details of accounting methods throughout his career and insights into a number of company personalities.
