Description

Calendar for the year 1954 (January to December) illustrated by Wellington artist Edith Kathleen Robison, nee Bendall, who was born in New Zealand in 1879, the daughter of William and Mary Eliza Bendall. She was a close friend of Katherine Mansfield and it has been noted that they had planned a children's book together, with illustrations by Robison and poems by Mansfield.

The single artwork depicting a young child would appear to have been printed with the watercolour applied to each individual copy by the artist. The name of the artist appears as "E. K. Robison" within the circular frame of the image, and has initials added in pencil just outside the frame.

The calendar consisting of 12 printed pages with card cover has the word "Calendar" printed in brown ink, and one calendar page for every month.

A loop of red silk ribbon attached by adhesive paper to reverse allowed the item to be hung.

Inscriptions on reverse state (in ink) "To Brownlee, with admiration, affection, and good wishes, from Margaret Scott 14 July 1987", and in pencil "given to Margaret Scott by Jeanne Renshaw (KM's sister)".

Jeanne Worthington Renshaw was the younger sister of Katherine Mansfield and Margaret Scott was a Katherine Mansfield scholar, author and librarian who corresponded with Kirkpatrick.

Also includes colour copy of another sketch of a child by Robison, with the original annotated "The child with the fringe - Days Bay" and initialed "E K B", while the copy is inscribed by Kirkpatrick as "Original sketch with Hugh Norwood 7 Jan. 1999".
