Date
[ca 1899]

Description

Group portrait showing Maori and European men together with Maori women and children, all wearing European style clothing, seated and standing on a shingle beach together with a dog and a shark. In the background are hills, dwellings and fences. The image is most likely from the summer of 1899, taken by an unidentified photographer.

The fragment of manuscript the photograph is mounted on appears to be part of a journal documenting excursions around Whangarei Harbour in the summer of 1899, and makes specific reference to McLeod Bay and Urquharts Bay in the area. The text concludes with the statement 'The settlers were most hospitable'.
