A view of the growing settlement of Whanganui, from across the river at Durie Hill. Shows Taylor & Watt's wharf and premises in the foreground on the left, Rutland Hotel and St Mary's, the first Roman Catholic Church in Victoria Avenue in the middle ground. Also visible is Rutland Stockade on the hill to the right. The view is taken before the Victoria Bridge, later named the Whanganui City Bridge, was built in 1871
Backing board has remnants of a sticker from John Dixon Antiques Ltd, Auckland, that reads: 'Whanganui, 1862 / Original watercolour by EJR (unidentified artist)'. The initials could be excluding the surname,as there is further inscription that is obscured by the title and date
