Description

Digital copy of a photograph album containing 48 black and white prints relating to Thomas Alexander Brandon Grant service on the Hospital Ship No. 2 'Marama' during World War One. Taken between 1915 and circa 1919 by Grant.

Locations are in New Zealand, Africa, Yemen, England, Ireland, France, South Africa, Egypt, Greece, Malta and Australia.

- Scenes taken from the side of the ship include: loading wounded at Stavros, crowd farewell at Wellington wharf (dated Dec 1915), approaching port of Aden, Pitcairn Island, a soldier high diving, landing Irish wounded on Dublin wharf with General Maxwell visible, Red Cross ambulances and wounded on wharf at Valletta harbour, lines of cars and ambulances on Melbourne wharf, an English Channel patrol zeppelin overhead, Capetown wharf and Table Mountain, youth in canoes diving for coins off Sierra Leone, and crowds on arrival at Timaru wharf.

- Views taken from the side of the ship showing other vessels include: 'Lord Nelson' battleship in Salonika harbour, a British monitor warship and dhows at Port Said, a minesweeper at Alexandria, the SS 'Wahine' and a cruiser ship in Valletta Harbour, French ships in Boulogne harbour, transport ships at Southampton and Cape Town, NZHS 'Maheno' and an Italian submarine in the English Channel.

- Views taken on board the ship include: 'wingies' (soldiers with amputated arms), a blind Australian soldier basket making, medical corp soldiers wearing life jackets, heavy seas, soldiers in fancy dress including men dressed as women, and ships officers.

- Views taken on land include: local 'coalies' eating on wharf (possibly Africa), Durban, damaged buildings in Dublin after the Easter Rising 1916, and Bombay street and railway station.

Inscriptions: Front end leaf page is inscribed '3/1319 Sergt Alex Grant'
