The Aide tells The Politician that 'the cleaners held a protest yesterday about about the new labour laws.' The Politician remarks that that was why everything looks so 'spick and span'.
On 24 July 2013 cleaners protested against employment law changes will enable smaller cleaning contractors to drive down wages and conditions. The government intends exempting businesses with fewer than 20 staff from the Employment Relations Act which says that when contracts change hands, workers must be transferred to the new employer on their existing terms. There is fierce competition for cleaning contracts and unions say companies put in low tenders, then re-employ the staff at lower pay rates and inferior conditions.
