Description

Papers of members of the Silver and Mortimer families in England, dating from the late eighteenth century, and papers (including photographs) relating to members of the Hurley family who lived in New Zealand from the early 1840s.

Source of title - Supplied by Library

Papers relating to the Silver family came to New Zealand with Annette Muriel Silver (known as Tommy Silver, died 1959 in Wellington), the sister of Gerald Morgan Silver (1884-1962), and sister-in-law of Elizabeth Lorenna Silver (nee Hurley (1892-1972)). Gerald Silver came to New Zealand before World War I, and fought with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in the Samoan Advance Party in the 5th Reinforcements. He fought in Samoa and Suez. His sister Annette Muriel Silver was awarded the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service Medal, having served on the Hospital Ship Asturias in World War I. She came to New Zealand about 1947, and brought the family papers with her. In England she lived at Monkton Cottage at Monks Risborough. She never married, and neither did her sister Norah Silver. Her other brother Mortimer L'Estrange Silver was married to Katy but they had no children. Mortimer L'Estrange Silver was a Vice-Admiral in the Royal Navy (1869-1946). The papers were passed to A Eaton Hurley, brother-in-law of Gerald Morgan Silver, who was legal adviser for Annette Muriel Silver. From there they were passed to his son David Eaton Hurley.
