Three surgeons bend over a patient who lies desperately ill on the operating table. With his last breath the patient says 'Hang on! - I think I'd like a referendum first!' Context: The 'patient', Greece, is hugely in debt. Greece was offered a bailout deal by the EU (European Community) but PM George Papandreou responded by announcing that there would need to be a referendum to ensure that the Greek people were behind the deal. His announcement of a referendum angered European leaders and sent shockwaves through its markets. The referendum idea was quickly dropped and Papandreou forced to step aside.
