Description

[1] In the first of 5 frames a furious sergeant asks a soldier if he is 'the bloke who writes poetry for the "NZEF Times"' (New Zealand Expeditionary Forces). The soldier replies 'Yea- O sergeant mine, what irks thee?' The sergeant yells 'THIS!!! Our lieutenant comes from Foxton, our sergeant comes from Hutt, the lieutenant is a bit peculiar, but the sergeant's a proper '!?*!!!??? mutt'. In the last two frames the soldier expresses extreme remorse 'Oh - I'm sorry Sarge - cripes I'm sorry - I should've put a comma after Foxton! Context - New Zealand forces in World War 2. [2] In the first of 3 frames an officer phones the 'Maori Battalion' and asks 'Have those pigeons arrived yet?' The second frame shows the damaged building 'Villa Maria' in which the Maori Battalion is living; outside is a sign reading 'Maori BN sigs' and in the third frame a soldier from the Maori Battalion munches on the remaining pigeon bones and replies 'Yes thanks Sir - and plurry good they were too'. Context - Italy and the use of pigeons to deliver messages.
