Description

The diary covers the period 15-28 Apr 1927 and was written in May 1927. Diederich and Scanlon set off to tramp across the Tararuas from Levin to Masterton. They became lost and a massive search took place; after 14 days they walked out. Comprises: diary (11 leaves); newspaper cuttings (15 leaves); notes and a list of searchers supplied by J Bafrie(?) constable, 28 Apr 1927. Newspaper cuttings describe the search.

Diederich became a magistrate in Fiji. He enlisted in the New Zealand forces and was killed in Italy in Apr 1945. Scanlon became a Roman Catholic priest and died in Apr 1987 at Norfolk Island.
