Description

A man and a woman sit watching TV and reading the newspaper. The paper has two headlines, the first reads 'Oz govt to take on whalers' and the second reads 'McCully sorts out Hayden' [sic Haden]. The woman comments that she feels very reassured to have a 'government that's prepared to fearlessly tackle the truly big issues'. Refers to the Australian government's application to the International Court of Justice that was lodged earlier this week and that argues that Japan has breached an international obligation to ban commercial whaling. Australia also argues Japan has breached an obligation to refrain from killing humpback and fin whales. The application calls on the court to stop Japan from conducting its whale research activities. US representative at the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and New Zealand argue that negotiation is a better way to protect the whales. In contrast to Australia's strong stance McCully's excitement about Andy Haden's remarks seems trivial.
