Poster promoting Wellington, with stories about Wellington's triumphs, with a special slant on hats and the way they sometimes become airborne in the wind. Incidents (each illustrated with an appropriate hat) include:

1875: R D Muldoon wears two hats at once: Prime Minister and Minister of Finance

1982: Elton John raises the roof and a few hats at Athletic Park

1953: The Queen wears a crown (an unusual hat) to open Parliament

1855: Earthquakes raised more land, a cause for celebration for future golfers, real estate agents and airport authorities (throwing their hats in the air)

1981: Jubilant Wellington fans toss Paul Quinn skywards after his team wins the Ranfurly Shield. "Paul came down; his hat didn't"

1978: Meda McKenzie becomes the first Wellington girl to swim Cook Strait. Hats off the Meda

1973: New Zealand cricket team beats the Poms at the Basin Reserve

1773: Captain Cook anchored in Port Nicholson. "As the anchor went down, his hat went up - and hasn't been seen since"

1942: G.I.s take over Paekakariki - bringing with them chewing gum, jitter-bugging and Betty Grable pin-ups.
