Double Fairlie locomotive under construction, at Pipitea Station, Thorndon Quay, Wellington, photographed in 1876. St Paul's Church is in the background. Man in foreground unidentified. Photographer also unidentified.
Note on back of file print reads: "At Pipitea Station, Wgtn's first station. This locomotive was being erected at the southern end of the station yard. It was built by the Avonside Engine Co. of Bristol, England, in 1875, and dismantled, shipped to Wellington and erected there in 1876. It made its first trip on the 5pm train to Upper Hutt on 23rd Sept 1876. As far as is known it was transferred in mid 1878 to the Wanganui section."
