Hogarth, William, 1697-1764 :[The Laughing audience. Wm Hogarth. London. 1732]
- Date
- 1736 - 1737

- Description
Designed as a subscription ticket. The fashionable beaux on the top level are ignoring the stage and turning their attention to the orange-sellers. The bored connoisseur in the centre is looking down his nose, and the ordinary folk `below' them are roaring with the enjoyment of the play. In the foreground are three sedate members of the orchestra, in total constrast to the people immediately behind them.
In 1737 Hogarth bunched together `A chorus of singers' and `The Laughing audience' with `Scholars' and `The Company of Undertakers', selling them as `Four etchings of different characters of heads in groups'.
