Description: Transcription of letters to his mother and younger brother and sister, from a young immigrant. The first was written during the voyage of the`Halcione' which arrived in Wellington on 24 August 1871. Letters describe his arrival and early years in Wellington, the opening of his photography studio in Manners Street, his training as an engineering cadet in the Public Works Office, and subsequent employment in the Waikato Railways Office in 1874. Also includes descriptions of travel in the North Island, and his marriage. Letters end with the arrival of his younger brother Stanley in October 1878.
