The letters were edited by the author to delete references to family matters. What remains is a detailed description of the conduct of the War as seen from Rogers' perspective. His duties involved managing traffic to and from the front and collecting intelligence. This kept him in close contact with the New Zealand Army during the various campaigns it was involved in in France. Rogers pays particular attention to his dealings with both Corps and regimental officers and men.

Rogers worked at the Railway Workshops in Petone. He joined the Volunteers in 1902 and was frequently seconded to the Defence Department. In Aug 1914 he was appointed Assistant Commandant on Somes Island. In February 1916 he left New Zealand aboard the `Rangiotu' with the 3rd Battalion of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade for Egypt and subsequently landed in France in May 1916. In August 1916 he was seconded as a field officer, II ANZAC Army Corp (later Headquarters XXII Corps) and appointed Road and Traffic supervisor. He served in this capacity until the end of hostilities.

Description: Photograph number eighteen in manuscript. 'This is up forward in the Ypres Salient, counter battery work. You will note the gunners along the roadside till the bombardment is over, then they go back and retaliate. Sometimes their guns have gone, like the one you see with the H.E. The two men you see in the foreground are Sgt. Dent and Jimmy Fettis - they are waiting for a stampede to take the corner. Transport horses are trained, they know they have to break down from a gallop to turn the corner. That's where the boys step in, two of us are standing by the camera, on another corner, in case Dent misses. Note the eighteen pounder shell cases to be added to the pile you see in the Dump photo. Description: Photograph number thirty-two in manuscript. `This is an interesting photo - on the right is a mule team man using the main road, on his own. The horse carries six 18lb shells - he dumps them anywhere and goes back, keeping under shell fire. He broke away from his team; he would have been shot, but he was caught by the M.P's under shell fire. The post is Milcot, you will note our wire running down to the rear. The dugout is an old German O.P. The corner is the road running down to the Butts. The timber was dumped at 2 a.m., the Sgt. who did it would be demoted. Note our man up watching both roads.' Description: Photograph number three in manuscript. `This is an amusing photo really; Major-General Swinton wrote in his book, Vol. 2, "Two doctors going forward with their orderlies, it was quiet at that time." Who are the two Y.M.C.A boys, or Sgt. Guthrie M.M. M.I.D. and Corp. Coben M.M., as orderlies, which of the two are orderlies? Us four have our Army Corps arm bands on. The photo was taken by Paris - he was attached to me for quite a time. We were doing a road reconnaissance; from right to left, me, Lieut. Williams, two Y.M.C.A orderlies, Sgt. Guthrie M.M M.I.D., Corp Coben M.M. We did have Lieut. Stevens and his batman with us but Stevens was killed 20 minutes before this photo was taken. There are shells flying overhead whilst we are sitting there. Note the foliage in the foreground - green and fresh. The forest was like that the day before. You can see Fritz's trenches quite plain.
