Description

View looking north along the beachline (now the corner of Lambton Quay and Grey Street) with houses along the left of the view and a large group of people standing on the sand amidst piles of timber. Several people appear to be standing on a raised platform decked with bunting. Two men on horseback stand to the left; also two people in a small cart with a horse, with others standing back nearer the houses.

Copied from an engraving in the "Illustrated London News", 5 Nov 1859 p 434. According to the accompanying text in the Illustrated London news, the wood engraving was based on a drawing by Sir William Fox.

The Oddfellows' Hall was on the present site of the T & G Building, corner of Lambton Quay and Grey St. The laying of the foundation stone was the work of Superintendant Isaac Featherston
