Webber's memoirs were written while working as an unpaid clerk in the Treasury in Auckland in 1842. Covers his first 20 years and describes life while serving in the West African Survey under Sir Edward Belcher, return to England, and his 4 years on the Mediterranean Station.
Webber's journal begins on the voyage to New Zealand 20 Aug and ends with Webber in Auckland 22 Jun 1842. Describes departure from Sydney, life in Van Diemen's Land, meetings with members of the Ross Antarctic Expedition, visits to Norfolk Island, arrival at the Bay of Islands, New Zealand landscape, attempts to obtain a government post, social life in Auckland and the barracks, land question, Governor Hobson, trial of Maketu, Auckland Maori
