Cover James' birth, childhood in London, the voyage to New Zealand on the `African' in 1861, his work on the `Southern Cross' newspaper in Auckland, impressions of Dunedin and New Zealand in general, his employment as a shearer, station hand, miner, gardener and carter in NSW and Victoria 1865-1876. Includes sketch maps detailing his travels in Australia and an undated photograph of farm labourers.

James Fry was born in England. In 1861 the Fry family emigrated to New Zealand settling in Auckland, then Dunedin, where James' father became a storekeeper on the goldfields. In 1865 the family moved to Melbourne.
