Description

Shows wounded Maori in trenches at Gate Pa after the battle. Two figures lying down under blankets, one with a dog; and one seated figure with a dog. In the background at ground level men are carrying off the dead on stretchers.

Other Titles - Sketch in the pah

Other Titles - Gate Pa

Extended Title - Wounded Maories and their dogs

Inscriptions: Recto - top left - 3637 (looks like 3631, but there is a tear in the paper, and if it matches figure on verso, it is likely to be 3637).; Recto - bottom right - [Title] / H Robley Lt /68th [LtInfy?]; Verso - Sketch in the pah / Wounded Maories & their dogs / Several wounded Maories that had not been carried off by their friends lay in the burrows of the pah and the two I have ......sketched had their dogs remaining beside them, though of course very frightened. They allowed themselves very reluctantly to be led away by the pakehas (European). The white dog in the picture ran away from his captor and for some days kept sight of the works waiting for his master and causing some alarm amongst the [outlying?] sentries in the fern at night. The dead man close to a cooking place in front was killed by a shell passing through his right knee and carrying away a great part of the left leg - the wounded are being carried away in stretchers out of the pah. The different hiding places you can see in the passages where they remained safe from shot & in the assault raked our stormers.; Verso - (In red ink) GATE PA / 2 wounded / 1 dead / I think the C of E minister / the Maori priest was worse off / head & one arm blown away

Robley was involved in the fighting at Gate Pa.
