Description

Four men (Fox, Heaphy, Brunner and Kehu) with their packs and a gun by a camp-fire in the foreground. Kehu is smoking, one of the European men (either Brunner or Heaphy) is reclining on his pack, the other is standing admiring the view, while the third (probably Fox's self-portrait, since he is bearded and looks older) is kneeling to the right. Beyond the men is a broad flat plain, with hills in the background.

Exhibited in 'Two centuries of New Zealand landscape art' Exhibition at Auckland City Art Gallery, 2 February - 22 April 1990.

Exhibited in 'Treasures in Trust' exhibition to celebrate 75th anniversary of the Alexander Turnbull Library in 1995.

Exhibited in 'Picturing Paradise; the colonial watercolours of William Fox', Exhibition at National Library Gallery 25 February - 18 June 2000; Hocken Library, Dunedin, 11 September - 15 October 2000. Curated by Jill Trevelyan.

An incident on the exploratory trip taken by Heaphy, Fox and Brunner with the Maori guide Kehu from Nelson to the hinterland and back in 1846. Lake Arthur was the name the three Europeans gave to Lake Rotoiti, but it has subsequently reverted to its original Maori name.
