Description: Photographs of the West Coast taken by Hokitika photographer Ben Thiem. Images no. 11-16 have the photographer's official stamp on the back which reads "Ben Thiem, photographer, Hokitika. This photograph must not be copied without the permission of Ben Thiem, photographer, Hokitika". These are stamped with the photographer's own numbers: F1, F26, F29, F31 and F32. The first two images show sunset over water, with lights in the windows of a train in the middle distance. Image no. 3 shows a waterfall at Mitchells, near "Lake Moana" (Lake Brunner); image no. 4 shows houses at Punakaiki. Lake Kanieri (Kaniere) is seen in images 5-10, including no. 10 which shows the road to Lake Kanieri under snow on July 20th, 1931. Photograph number 11 shows the Cook River Flats with the Fox Glacier Hostel visible on the extreme right, followed by close-up views of the Fox Glacier terminal and ice formations on the glacier. Description: Photographs of lakes, mountains and valleys in the Lake Manapouri, Doubtful Sound areas. Various photographers have been identified, some with only their surname. They include C S Ross, Alec Tuff (images 109-111), Miss Theomin [Dorothy Michaelis Theomin] (images 90, 97 and 111), Miss Wimperis (a folder entitled "Miss Wimperis" containing images numbered 86-101), J Murrell (a folder containing images numbered 102-107), J Ewart (image no. 93), D.W.(image no. 112), and probably W A K Kennedy. Several images show individuals (only one of whom has been identified (W. Grave)), and unidentified groups. A number of views show launches and their passengers on Lake Manapouri and in Doubtful Sound. Description: Alpine, bush, valley and mountaineering images taken by various photographers in the South Island. While there is a typescript inventory, many of the sites are unidentified, including images numbered 1-7, 27-141. There are two major sequences, one taken by Edgar Richard Williams (signed ER) when on a trip up the Rakaia River with T.T. Gough in 1917 (information from internet) (image nos. 10-11, 14, 18-26). Some of these have notes on the back added by John Pascoe at a later date. The other main sequence shows an expedition to Mount La Perouse in 1932. This sequence was possibly taken by William D Frazer (from information on internet), although it is possible they were taken by Jack Mitchell (John Wesley Mitchell, Snr). The La Perouse expedition included mountaineers Tom Sheenan, Alex Graham, Marion Scott, Jack Mitchell, Louie Roberts (Mary Louise Roberts), and Anne Stevenson. Images numbered 6-7, show a large group of men, possibly members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, or the New Zealand Alpine Club (either the Canterbury or the Otago branch). John Dobree Pascoe is visible standing in the middle row towards the right. Most or the men are seen in front of a mountain hut, while three men are perched on the roof. The last two images are sterescopes from an "Earthquake series" published by W.S. Smith, showing earthquake damage in San Francisco in 1906. They are No. 317 "Northeast from Fifth Street", and No. 318 "Portsmouth Square". Most of the places identified are listed above. Quantity: 150 b&w original photographic print(s). (Herbert Otto Frind) (nos. 21-26, 40-45); Leslie Hinge (no. 47); H.E.L. Porter (nos. 59-65); Mrs P. Graham (Elizabeth Muriel Graham) (no. 66); C. Barker (no. 67); ? Lewthwaite (nos. 71-72, 75-76); and G.E. Mannering (nos. 77-81, 85-89). Nos. 1-11 show scenes on the route to Alex Knob, with the Franz Josef Glacier and the Divide at its head, and the Waiho Valley; nos. 27-39 are en route to, and views from, Torres Peak; and nos. 40-44 are views from Mt Thomson. Photograph number 47 shows seven guides with a coiled climbing rope and two crossed ice picks in front. Description: Alpine views in the South Island, taken by Dr Ebenezer Teichelmann, circa 1907-1911. For information on mountaineering trips taken by Dr Teichelmann, see internet at http://ebenezerteichelmann.blogspot.com/2007/12/teichelmann.html. In 1911 he took an exploratory trip with Alec Graham and Jack Clarke to the head of the Wanganui River (Westland). Image no. 17 shows their camp in the Wanganui River Valley, and image no. 19 shows Alex Graham trying unsuccesfully to ford the Lambert River. The article also mentions that he took many pictures on this trip. Photographs include views of Franz Josef Glacier, Mount Tasman, Mount Cook and David's Dome, taken from Mount Roon; views of the trip taken with Alec Graham and Jack Clarke showing the Lambert River (tributary of the Wanganui), the Lambert Glacier and Mount Lambert; also the area of the Lord River, Mount Lord, the Lord Glacier and Lord Range with Mount Stoddart, Malcolm Peak, Newton Peak and Mount Tyndall. Description: Scenic photographs of the Southern Alps, Lake Matheson and Lake Kanieri, Punakaiki and a bush railway near Hokitika, taken between circa 1910s to 1940s by various unidentified photographers, except one (no. 38) by John Wesley Mitchell which has an inscription on the back "Wishing you the compliments of the season, 1940, Lake Kanieri" signed J.W. Mitchell. There are many unidentified views; those identified include several taken from the Annette Plateau with the snowfield on the Sealey Range, McKenzie Plains, Liebig Range, various peaks including Isabel, Eric, Maungama, Eagle, and the Mueller Glacier, Mt Sealey; other views are taken from Mount Conrad in the Liebig Range and include the Murchison and Mannering Glaciers, the Malte Brun Range, Mounts Cooper, Elie de Beaumont and the Hochstetter Dome. Photograph no. 39 shows an unidentified light-coloured ship with three funnels (possibly the Empress of Britain), at sea, and a number of small ships drawn up alongside, in an unidentified location. Photograph no. 45, is inscribed on the back: "Mt Mannering from the south west ridge of the unnamed peak. Wataroa Pass upper right. Apperley & Sweney[?] photo". Photograph (no. 13) shows the hut owned by the Canterbury Coleege Mountain Biological Station; photograph (no. 25) of the old Benmore Station (no. 25) was taken by D L Lundy circa 1860s, and view (no. 26) shows the same site much later with fully grown macrocarpa trees, and the house in poorer condition; the views of the Midland Railway Line including when under construction, with the line, tunnels, and viaducts seen over a number of years were possibly taken by William Williams who was a photographer and who worked for the Railways Department; other images were probably taken by Charles Beken including one of "the meeting of the Arthur's Pass tunnel headings" with two men and a woman beside the dark opening.
