Description

Four men and a woman standing outside a whare in Plimmerton. Photograph taken by an unidentified photographer between 1890-1910.

Library client identified the young woman in the photograph as Kamiria Violet Mullen, born 1893, died 1984. Named Harriet Toomer at birth, her mother was Annie Toomer (Father's name not yet known.) She was adopted at three months by Ani Retimana and Te Kairangi Kerehoma and renamed Kamiria Waireti (Camelia Violet). She spoke te reo Maori only until she went to school. In 1917 she married Robert Mullen; she became a moving force in the Maori Women's Welfare League. Information December 2010.
