Comprises 137 letters written by Francis Dalton and his family from New Zealand to his family in England (1862-1906) and two account books relating to financial relations between them
The letters from Francis Dalton to his family include descriptions of his passage on the `Indian empire' (1862), experiences in Auckland, his participation in the land wars, settlement in various parts of Auckland, family affairs, business matters and related topics. Generally Francis Dalton mentions receipt of Carlisle newspapers and money. The letters of his wife, Esther, written to her brother-in-law, Pattinson, includes news of her husband's drinking and debts, their family, life in the Otahuhu settlement and the growing up of their children.
Also letters from Eliza Dalton (later Petchell) to her uncle, writing about family matters; from Francis Petchell during the Boer War to his great uncle, and Elizabeth, William and Joseph Henry Dalton, also writing to their uncle about various family matters

Description: Letters from Francis Dalton to his brothers, Pattinson and John, in Carlisle, written while on the `Indian Empire' in 1862 and from various parts of Auckland (Vincent Street, Frogmore Cottage, Freemans Bay, the Governor's Guard and Newton). Dalton describes their passage, arrival in Auckland and the expenses of getting ashore, of getting employment on a farm clearing tea tree, of a fire in a grocer's shop in Queen Street which wreaked havoc in the city and the wreck of HMS `Orpheus'. He writes of the developing war with the Maori and negotiations and events associated with this, of his employment, his children's education, and related matters. Quantity: 1 folder(s).

Description: Letters from Esther Dalton to her brother-in-law, Pattinson Dalton in Carlisle with news of her husband's drinking and debts, their family, life in the Otahuhu settlement and the growing up of their children. She mentions further debt problems of her husband's, his involvement in the gold mining company, Bright Smile, and his death in 1891. She writes of a tangi for a Maori king held in the Waikato (Tawhiao) in 1894, and continues to thank Pattinson for remitting money to her and often mentions the health of family members.
