Half-length frontal portrait of A.H.Turnbull, founder of the Alexander Turnbull Library. Turnbull is shown formally dressed in a collar and tie and grey-brown suit. A green patterned wallpaper is shown behind him and the frames of three paintings appear to the viewer's right.

Physical Description: Oil on canvas, 715 x 524 mm
Provenance: Portrait commissioned by A.H.Turnbull and exhibited at the Wellington Art Society exhibition, September, 1909. Retained in the collection of Turnbull and became part of the Alexander Turnbull Library collection on his death. It hung opposite the front door in the entrance hall of Turnbull House, Bowen Street, for many years, as shown in various photographs, including negative 1/2-002853 (copy in Turnbull Library Pictures file drawers, under heading 41. Wellington. Libraries. Alexander Turnbull).
