Description

Profile head and shoulders view of the son of a Maori chief of the Bay of Islands, his face tattooed. He wears a flax cloak, and a greenstone ear adornment

Originally published on the same sheet as 'The head of a chief of New Zealand, the face curiously tattow'd or mark'd according to their manner' and 'A war canoe of New Zealand'. This copy has been cropped to exclude the other engravings, and is hand-coloured

From a drawing by Sydney Parkinson, Bay of Islands, December 1769, of the son of a chief. The man was wounded by shot in a fracas with James Cook and his party on 29 December 1769

The man's name was written as Otegoongoon in the version published in G W Anderson's 'A new, athentic and complete collection of voyages ...' (1784)
