Description

Three quarters portrait of a Vanuatuan man. His name may be Vate (inscribed on the work); or, more probably, "Vate" may be a version of Efate, the major island in Vanuatu. Other portraits in this sequence are inscribed with the name of the area in which the subject was painted

The artist, who has signed with monogram ABM is likely, but not proven, to be Adam Brunton Messer, surgeon aboard H.M.S.Pearl, stationed in Australia, in 1875.
