Contains notes postmarked 19 Aug 1897, mainly in English largely concerning the history of the Te Whaiti wars, with a covering note from Best saying `am sending these old leaves in case I should lost my manuscript'; notes postmarked 19 Aug 1897 in Maori and shorthand on pages numbered 14-22 mainly containing whakapapa and waiata. The first pages of these latter notes are in another hand with note - `Hurae Puketapu N. Ruapani'.
The Puketapu letter contains Ngati Ruapani whakapapa; the other Maori material contains notes about Maori vocabulary items, waiata and karakia from Tuhoe (?), and notes about various Maori customary concepts and practices, including the training of skilled tradespeople
