Description

The scene is Wellington Harbour with port and cityscape (including the Beehive) in the distance. Left foreground is a Russian fishing trawler, with hammer and sickle painted on it, laden with fish. It has a huge superstructure of lamps and lights and five smiling Russians are busy hawling in more fish from nets that they have strewn about the harbour. The captain and mate stand watching from the top deck. The captain has binoculars while the mate reads from a newspaper named Dominski, 'Hawea chases Japanese squid boat.' The captain comments that this news means that the heat will be off them for a while. Refers to the troubles the fishing industry is having with other nations fishing in New Zealand waters. While the government worries about Japanese squid fishing boats, the Russians can continue happily trawling Cook Strait.

'Hawea chases Japanese squid boat' is a newspaper clipping glued onto the drawing of the newspaper, 'Dominski' that the mate is reading.
