Portrait of an unidentified seated woman taken by an unidentified photographer.
The woman is likely to be one of the daughters of William Jenkins (1813-1902) and Pairoke (1823-1853) from Te Uruhi/Waikanae, and Porirua; possibly Mere (born1847) or Jane (born1849).
Sources of descriptive information:
The negative register has an entry for the file print heading and gives the name Jenkins.
Information from a researcher suggests the photograph may have been displayed with other portraits of the Jenkins children (Erene and Henrietta) at the New Zealand Industrial Exhibition of 1865, in Dunedin. The portraits were mentioned by the jurors who decided on awards after the exhibition as "other Exhibits consist of Photographs of Wm. Jenkins and family, of Porirua, evidently good portraits". This photo has been reproduced in the books: 'Maori in Focus', 'Wellington Through a Victorian Lens', and 'Negative Kept'.
