Letter from Louis Melville Theakstone to Ethel Sturm (1915) with additional information suplied by Michael McLean; and transcription of incomplete letter from Claude Burley to Ethel Sturm (n d). The first four pages of Claude Burley's 24-page letter describes his experiences of the war in general and specifically; he mentions various New Zealanders he met, the various areas and battles he was in including Armentieres, Amiens, Freicourt, Flers, the battle of the Somme and the soldiers eventual departure for Southampton and arrival in Wales.
The letter from Claude Burley was written in [Oct?] 1915 while he was convalescing with the 2nd Battalion, Wellington Regiment; he describes the battalion's march from Airaines to the Somme (2 Sep), his participation in the major offensive against the Germans from 15 to 21 Sep, when they rested, the artillery bombardment of the German lines, the advance on and capture of their forward trenches, the first deployment of tanks, the contribution of aircraft in the battle and the physical conditions at the front for the soldiers.

Description: Original letter written to Ethel Sturm in [Oct?] 1915 by Claude Burley a member of the 2nd Battalion, Wellington Regiment, while he was convalescing in England.
