Description

The top image, from an original made in 1778 by John Webber, shows a view of Christmas Harbour in Kerguelen's Land, with penguins and a man about to kill one. Cook's two sailing ships are moored in the stretch of water beyond.

The lower image, from an original drawn by John Webber in 1777, shows a clearing in tropical vegetation. In the far left foreground is an open thatched shelter with two figures beside it. In the centre foreground a man walks with fruit or other foodstuffs tied to either end of a pole over his right shoulder. There are three thatched hutts on a slight rise in the background with palm trees beyond.
