Shows a profile head and shoulders portrait of the Ngati Toa chief Te Rauparaha, wearing a cloak, albatross feather earring, and feather in his hair. He has full moko.

A copy after Nelson artist, Isaac Coates, who is likely to have met Te Rauparaha in Nelson in March 1843. Compare several similar portraits by Coates in the Alexander Turnbull Library, the Nelson Provincial Museum and the Peabody Museum, Salem, Mass., USA.
