Description

Shows the young Joseph Banks, not long after his return from James Cook's first circumnavigation, standing by a pillar, a curtain to the right and a sky background to the left. He is wearing a Maori flax cloak with a fine taniko border. A birdcage, a taiaha, a canoe paddle and an adze are on his right side and at his feet, along with a book containing plant specimens and other Pacific artifacts.

Edges trimmed.

The original oil on which this mezzotint is based hangs in the Usher Gallery, Lincolnshire, England

Inscriptions: Verso - Note in A. W. F. Fuller's hand describes scene and says colouring done by hand.
