- Description
Upper view: To the left, three standing and one fallen Easter Island statues, with a European artist and a companion and an Easter Islander to the right. A European ship is in the background.
Lower view: Two European row boats pulling off from a rough rocky shore. High cliffs and some vegetation in the background. This view is a copy of an engraving after a pencil sketch by F. W. Beechey, Captain of H. M. S. Blossom, who visited Pitcairn in December 1825. The scene is at Bounty Bay, the only landing place on Pitcairn Island, with St Paul's Rocks in the background.
Plate 178 from an unknown Swedish publication, probably a missionary journal. The upper image is redrawn from the engraving by Sainson, in Vol 1, opp. p.507 the lower from the same plate in Voyage pittoresque autour du monde by J. S. C. Dumont d'Urville (Paris, 1834-5). The Swedish language version of Voyage Pittoresque ... (held by the Library at 910.4 /P/DUM) is duodecimo size and has no illustrations. It was published between 1836 and 1840.
The Library holds a related image to the view of Pitcairn, possibly the original watercolour for the print. See A-118-009 IRN 160825.
